There is a big difference between being taught a lesson and learning a lesson for yourself. No matter how adequately someone teaches us, how attentive we are, or how hard we are listening when someone is teaching, it just doesn’t seem to stick as well as when you learn a lesson for yourself through experience.
When you go through something and experience something first hand, it presses into your heart deeper and carries more weight. I’m grateful for the time I have spent in Charlottesville because it has allowed me to learn some lessons first hand. Many of the lessons I’ve learned here, I have been taught before, but when you are forced to live, learn, and figure it out on your own, the value of the lesson increases exponentially.
