It’s News, Not Advice

11.10.21

In a recent Joe Coffey sermon, he was talking about how the word gospel literally translates to “good news”, not “good advice”.

News is very different than advice. News is something which has already been done or has already happened. Advice is a thought or teaching on something we ought to do.

In my quiet time, I’ve been reading through the book of John, and one morning it struck me that the books Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are called the gospels. Why? Because they are written accounts of good news. So I’m writing this to myself to remind myself and anyone reading the gospels – we have to look for the person in the story. The gospels were written about the life of Jesus and proclaim the good news of His life, death, and resurection.

Does Jesus teach and provide wisdom to his disciples? Absolutely. But if we only search for nuggets of advice and teaching, we will only ever find a teacher. We will miss the Savior who loves us dearly and lived his life on a mission of reconciliation for us! We will miss the grace He freely gives, and the power of this grace which offers us the ability to really change and become more like Jesus.

Lord, help me not to miss your good news.
