One Word 2024: Trust

1.26.24

Every year I choose a word God puts on my heart to help me have a specific focus. This year my word is TRUST. I’ve learned relationships are dynamic – they don’t stay the same. Over time, you grow closer together or further apart. The same is true for Jesus. Every day we grow closer to Jesus, becoming more like him, or drift further from Jesus, becoming more like our fractured world.

There is a fancy word in the bible called sanctification. I’ve read this word and heard it in church, but I just recently learned what it meant. Sanctification is the process of becoming more like Jesus. That sounds nice, doesn’t it? But how?

Trust.

We learn to trust Jesus with more of our lives – becoming more like him along the way.

I tend to doubt God sometimes. Doubts are those questions we have designed our lives around to try and answer. I think doubts are common – even a disciple who looked into the face of the resurrected Jesus had doubts until he saw the holes in his hands. What we do with our doubts is important. Too often I have taken matters into my own hands, trying to answer doubts with my own solutions. It’s a tough realization to come to terms with because it hasn’t brought me closer to Jesus. Thankfully, God knew there would be doubters like me, so he gave us his word filled with enough truth to cover every doubt I’ve ever had.

In life, we reap what we sow. This year I want to sow seeds of truth and harvest a greater trust in Jesus. I want to take the truth Jesus offers through his spoken word and use his truth to speak a better word over the doubts in my life, becoming more like him along the way.

“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” – John 17:17

“I trust in you, O Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hand.” – Psalm 31:14-15
