BE the Inspiration

I believe the most valuable thing a coach can do for his players is inspire them. The coaches who had the greatest impact on me, inspired me with their walk of life. A coach can only have so much of a foothold on their player’s life. At the end of the day, the players have to want it on their own. They have to put in the work to get better and they have to make the plays on game day. For this reason, a large portion of a coaches influence is the inspiration of a player. And each player may get inspired in a different way. A coach has to get to know each of his players well enough to know what buttons to press in order to inspire the individual. A player filled with inspiration to be his best and put in the work on his own is dangerous!

One of the best ways I’ve seen coaches inspire players is to open a window into their own life. Those coaches are honest, transparent, vulnerable, and they let their players see them for who they really are. Stop pretending to have all the answers. Admit when you’re wrong. Talk about your life. Speak about your flaws. Let the real you be seen. People can relate to that and will be inspired by your walk of authenticity.
