Chasing the Wind

5.10.19

“The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” – Isaiah 40:8

It is absurd how quickly the excitement and happiness from big wins, OT thrillers, and championships fades away. A coach who structures his life to solely pursue these things is caught chasing the wind. The true joy and fulfillment of coaching is found in the process, day in and day out. Saturdays come and go, and no matter the result, the next day you’re breaking down film, wondering how you can be better for the next challenge.

Wins should be celebrated, but they’re way too fleeting of a thing to live for. They’re just temporary moments of happiness. I love to compete and I love to win, and I want players who play for me to have the best experience possible. But the joy is found in the defining moments each day in the pursuit of the wins. In each of those defining moments and little daily battles, you help your players become better men – preparing them for the rest of their lives. That is the ultimate goal. That brings me joy and is a commission worth living for!
